Romantic rendezvous: Knox tortoises get visit from two Atlanta reptiles
the world of giant tortoises, Al's a prize catch. So what if he's 130 years old and weighs 550 pounds.
"There's just nothing wrong with him," said Knoxville Zoo Assistant Curator of Herpetology Michael Ogle. "Every zoo person who has ever seen him says, 'Wow, that's the biggest tortoise I've ever seen.' "
The Aldabra tortoise has lived at the zoo since 1974. He's spent the past 15 years with its other giant male, 350-pound, 90-year-old Tex. These guys need dates, and Ogle was the matchmaker.
Al hadn't seen a female tortoise since 1983. That's when the zoo's female, Debbie, died. Tex, who came to Knoxville in 1995, was last around a female tortoise in the late 1980s.
That changed on Wednesday when Al and Tex began sharing their outdoor summer habitat with Zoo Atlanta female tortoises Patches and Corky. Zookeepers hope the new roommates become mates. The females lay eggs later in summer, and baby tortoises hatch come winter.
But pairing up potential tortoise parents isn't all that simple. In the world of tortoise love, it seems absence really does make the heart grow fonder. The species' males and females must live separately four to five months to successfully reproduce. Neither zoo had enough room to house the animals away from each other on its property.
So, Al and Tex vacationed in Atlanta while that zoo's females, Patches, Corky and Standup, wintered in a Knoxville Zoo barn. East Tennessee winters are too harsh for the tortoises to be outdoors, although they enjoy summer outside.
The first tortoise exchange was made in October. On Wednesday, Knoxville zookeepers returned Standup to Zoo Atlanta to its male tortoise Shuffles. They brought back Al and Tex to Knoxville, where the males discovered Patches and Corky in an exhibit fresh with new clover.
For eager Al, it was lust at first sight. He moved much faster than stereotypical tortoise pace to mate with Patches. Tex, who crawls slowly because of an arthritic-like leg condition, later showed at least passing interest in Corky and Patches.
While the girl tortoises are smaller, each still weighs 200 to 250 pounds. Their ages - an estimated 60 to 70 years - don't hamper their reproductive chances. Female tortoises can lay more than one clutch of five to 15 eggs during the breeding season. Zookeepers would remove the baseball-size eggs from nests dug in the exhibit to incubate them.
Ogle says Aldabra tortoises were recently born at the Tulsa, Okla., zoo. They are native to just one place, the Aldabra Atoll, about 300 miles northwest of Madagascar.
"So if future zoos want to show giant tortoises, we have to start breeding them now," said Ogle.
Any offspring would be shared with Zoo Atlanta. Patches and Corky will leave Knoxville in October. If the arrangement is successful, the zoos could collaborate again.

Here is the cutting tale of a Chinese man who has carved a niche for himself by transforming his playing cards into hurling knives.
In reality, in China, the word kung fu can also relate to non-martial arts contexts and can come to mean any individual accomplishment or skill cultivated through long and hard work.
Bai Dengchun, age 23, who hails from northern China’s Shandong Province, can throw cards with such force and accuracy that from as far as 16 feet away he can slice a cucumber or burst a balloon. He can also crack an egg or knock off the end of a lit cigarette from a smoker’s mouth.
Bai’s parents respected his right to have a hobby but ultimately believed he was wasting his time. They changed their minds when a slot opened on the popular television show, China’s Got Talent. Below is a video clip from his amazing performance on that show.
Bai has been practicing kung fu since he was as a child, and ironically was always a very poor poker player. So he decided to throw the cards and win instead of playing them and lose.
“When I was young I loved playing poker but I always lost… The cards are like darts to me. I can precisely hit any target within a five meter (some 10 feet) radius,” said Bai.
He practiced the art of hurling cards as weapons every day for three years.

It is not known who the other two members of staff are.
One of the more explicit photos on Facebook shows Austin pole dancing. She later commented on Facebook: ‘Oh dear! Should have worn bigger pants! Shame!’
One parent claims that when he showed the images to head Kate Stuart he was told to ‘mind his own business’.
The father, who did not want to be named, said: ‘She said what she and her staff did out of school was up to them.
‘I disagree with this as teachers are supposed to be setting a good example and they are clearly not.’
The teachers have now removed the images from Facebook and made their profiles private.
The school yesterday refused to comment.
A spokesman for the governing body said: ‘The photos in question were taken at a private hen night attended by a small group of school staff.
‘Any images posted on Facebook were only intended to be viewed among a select group of friends.
‘Although these photographs were taken out of school time, it is regrettable they were published and circulated through a social networking site.’

English teacher arrested after she 'had sex with FIVE students during an orgy in her home while her soldier husband was serving overseas'
A teacher has been jailed after being accused of having sex with five of her teenage students during an orgy at her home
Brittni Colleps, a married mother of three, invited the boys to her Texas home for the sex romp and the encounter was filmed on their cell phones.
The 27-year-old's husband was away overseas duty serving with the US military.
Colleps, an English teacher and girl's basketball coach, faces up to ten years in jail after being charged with five felony counts of inappropriate relationships between a student and a teacher.
Although all five of the teens involved with Colleps were 18 years of age or older, Texas law prohibits sex between a teacher and a student, regardless of the student’s age.
According to a police arrest warrant affidavit, the investigation into Colleps began after a 19-year-old student told investigators about his sexual relationship with his English teacher.
The student told police the relationship began with sexually explicit text messages and photos that they sent to each other for about a week in late April.
Later that month the student drove to Colleps home in Arlington, Texas where they had sex.

Colleps showed off her Texas pride, and her wedding ring, in this photo posted to Facebook. Her husband was serving overseas at the time of the alleged orgy
He later received a text message from the teacher saying they 'had fun' and an invite back to the house.
When he arrived there were four other students from Kennedale High School present and they told police they all had sex with Colleps.
When police analyzed the teen's phone they found video footage of him and Colleps having sex. They also found sexually explicit photos and text messages the pair had sent each other.

Police later interviewed a second student who said he was present when the sex romp took place.
School officials learned about the teacher's alleged relationships and put her on leave with pay.
Schools Superintendent Gary Dugger posted a letter on the school’s website saying that the district was cooperating with investigators.
'As the alleged acts occurred off campus, once Kennedale ISD personnel were put on notice, immediate action was taken,' the letters says.
Colleps is being held in the Arlington jail on $125,000 bail after turning herself into police on Monday.

YORK, Va. (WAVY) - A crab fisherman discovered a 32-year-old Williamsburg man wrapped in chains floating in a life raft on the James River, near Hogg Island, around 7 a.m. Friday.
"I actually thought he was dead so I just kind of you know touched his arm, and when I did, he moved and it was like he was delirious. He didn't know what he was talking about, and I asked where are you from, and how did you get out here with chains around your neck," said fisherman Allen Jenkins.
According to State Police, the man was pulled back to shore around 12:30 p.m.
Once back on land, State Police took the man into custody without incident. Officers say he was intoxicated.
He is now under medical observation, according to State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.
The man was chained to a black box in the raft.
"I didn't know he was laying on top of a bomb or a box of drugs or money or what, and you know instead of answering questions, he reached underneath of himself and I didn't know what he was going to grab, so I had my crew and everybody there so I just backed away," said Jenkins.
State Police technicians x-rayed the box and determined it only contained sand.
Police say the incident is not terrorist related.
Virginia State Police, Surry County Sheriff's Office, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Conservation Police, FBI and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating the incident.
At this time, no criminal charges have been filed.
Paralyzed man walks after epidural treatment

Rob Summers has been in a wheelchair since he was hit by a car in 2006, but with assistance has now taken his first steps in four years.
It is early days but scientists say their research brings new hope to people with spinal-cord injuries.
Mr Summers, 25, was paralysed in a hit-and-run incident and up until recently could not even wiggle his big toe.
He can now stand for several minutes and with support walk on a treadmill. He is also able to move his hips, knees, ankles and toes and has regained some sexual and bladder function.
He says the scientific breakthrough has been life-changing.
"It was an amazing feeling after not having had anything for four years. At one point it was just a dream and now it is reality and now I am taking literally the next step," he said.
"Being able to move my toes, ankles, knees on command was absolutely incredible. I mean, there are not enough words to describe how I felt."
Mr Summers's progress has all been possible thanks to process called epidural stimulation.
Professor Susan Harkema is a lead researcher on the US-based project and a neuroscientist at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
Professor Harkema says the principles of the research can be used regardless of what neurological injury has occurred as long as the body's circuitry has not been damaged.
She says it is hoped the research will lead to some people with spinal cord injuries standing, balancing and maybe even walking independently.
"We implanted an epidural stimulator and an electrode ray with the intent of accessing special circuitry in the spinal cord and - in essence, [activating] it," she said.
The electrical currents mimic the signals the brain normally transmits to initiate movement, retraining the spinal cord's neural network to use sensory input from the legs and make the muscles move.
"We were able to get the legs to move in flexion extension patterns like walking within the very first week and that was very unexpected," she said.
"In addition, within that week, we were able to get him to stand without any help and so the nervous system was able to generate enough commands to the muscles to have them contract sufficiently so he could stand."
Despite the amazing results, the researchers caution much more work needs to be done.
Mr Summers has limited feeling below the waist but it is not known if the treatment will work on patients who have no sensation.
Still, it is a remarkable discovery in a field that has had limited progress over 30 years of research.
"It is a very exciting time not only for moving these findings forward and the technology forward, but for lots of opportunities to address paralysis not only in spinal cord injury but any other neurologic disorder," Professor Harkema said.
The findings from the research have been published in the medical journal The Lancet.
Police: Mom Brings Child To Drug Deal, Shootout
Woman Claimed Wounds Came In Road Rage Incident
CINCINNATI -- A Butler County mother is accused of taking her daughter on a drug buy that ended in a shooting.
Deputies said Delena Rae Rohrig, 27, reported that she was involved in a road rage incident Friday on Interstate 75 at Liberty Way.
Sgt. Jeff Riegert said that Rohrig had been shot in the buttocks and her car was riddled with bullets. Rohrig's 7-year-old daughter was in the car with her at the time.
When deputies investigated, Riegert said details of the shooting didn't add up.
"Some evidence we took from the car wasn't making sense. (It) made the story seem almost unbelievable," Riegert said.
Deputies said Rohrig made the whole thing up. Riegert said after questioning Rohrig again, they learned that she was trying to buy heroin when the dealer shot at her car.
Rohrig was arrested and charged with filing a false police report and child endangering.
"The real disturbing part, which bothered all of us, is that there's a 7-year-old in the backseat of the car. So, not only did she take a 7-year-old to get narcotics, but she put her in a situation to where there was gunfire," Riegert said.
Riegert said one of the bullets narrowly missed the little girl.
"The baby was in the back seat. We have a bullet hole in the dashboard, two in the door and one just behind the door in the lower frame. The one in the back actually did strike the backseat, so you're within two feet of this child," Riegert said.
Rohrig's family said they're devastated and had tried to warn Delena for years.
Riegert said cases in which children are brought to drug deals are becoming all too common.
"Unfortunately, we're seeing it more and more. There's a trend where they get desperate, and if they've got nobody to watch their kids, they take them with them," he said.

He told Morgan that he 'should probably go and see a doctor and get some therapy, preying on your daughter like that'.
He replied: 'I'm not preying on her, yes I'm sleeping with her but it's not like I'm abusing her or something.'

In the introductory piece to the segment, Wilkos said that he wanted to make sure that the story was legitimate before taking it on and had asked for proof, which sources say came in the form of a video showing the couple having sex.
On part two of the show, which was aired 36 days later, Britney had returned, worried that she was pregnant despite the fact she said she was on birth control pills.
She told Wilkos she was two months behind on her period. But when he questioned her further, she revealed she wanted to get pregnant on purpose, telling him that she believed there was 'no scientific proof it would come out all weird'.
When her dad was brought on the show, the 18-year-old admitted that she wanted to get pregnant, shouting at him: 'I'm 18 years old, I want seven kids!'
Another reason they appeared on the show was because Britney was afraid that her father was cheating on her.

The new-look accommodation, to be trialled in South Australia, has "outperformed expectations" across the Tasman where it has been in use for a year.
Since the 60-bed block opened at Rimutaku Prison near Wellington there have been no incidents involving alcohol, drugs, mobile phones or weapons, and no violence against staff.
The block, entirely constructed from converted containers, has been touted as the cheapest and fastest way to build extra prison capacity as prisoner numbers reach all-time highs.
The South Australian Government announced earlier this month it would trial use of a six-unit block to see how effective it is.
If the New Zealand trial is anything to go by it could soon be in wide use in Australia.
New Zealand's corrections minister, Judith Collins, told parliament yesterday there had been significantly fewer incidents in the container unit when compared with other blocks.

Police and school officials are urging parents of students at Pittsburgh Roosevelt PreK-5 to search their children's belongings after a 7-year-old boy brought heroin to school today and passed it out to at least one classmate.
School staff discovered the drug after the student, a kindergartener, said he had cut his hand with a razor, prompting the principal to check his locker and bookbag. Inside, he found more razors and 18 stamp bags of the drug, police spokeswoman Diane Richard said.
"The kids are calling it 'the magic ticket,' because it is a white pack with a stamp of a bunny coming out of a hat," Ms. Richard said, encouraging parents to call 911 immediately if they find stamp bags. The boy told police he gave the small bags to three of his friends, but he also rides a bus and may have distributed it there as well. One parent already returned a bag of heroin to the school, police said.
It's unknown whether any children ingested the heroin, but Ms. Richard said parents should take their kids to Children's Hospital in Lawrenceville for an evaluation if they're concerned.

FOREVER ALONE INVOLUNTARY FLASHMOB
Last night in New York, a group of (presumably) single guys gathered by a couple of phone boxes in Times Square. On the face of it, there’s nothing too remarkable about that – people date all the time in New York, right? It’s what Americans do. But then again they were these phone boxes, with a public access CCTV camera trained upon them 24 hours a day (navigate to Cam 2). There was also a cut-out of that “Forever Alone” guy’s face stuck on the side of them, and 4Chan had lured all the single men there by pretending to be women who wanted to date them. Stir that all up in a big, cruel pot, and you have yourself a “Forever Alone Involuntary Flashmob”. We grappled with our consciences and managed to pin them to the ground long enough to send a couple of photographers down to capture the sadness.
Here’s the plot outline. The agreed start point was 7.30pm, but so many people had heard about the prank that I couldn’t access the ‘cam until just before 8pm. After peering at it for about five minutes, I realised that I was sat by myself in the dark at home at 1am on a Friday night, pitying at a bunch of guys for supposedly being “forever alone”. The sudden sense of irony was pretty crushing.
You couldn’t make out a great deal from the webcam at the time, but in retrospect, everything seemed to revolve around the man in the red jeans. All the other lonely men seemed to recognise him as an exemplar of loneliness, probably because he was wearing red jeans and carrying red roses. ‘Is it a coincidence that red is both the colour of love, and the colour of shame?’, I thought to myself, as I apologised to the only pizza delivery guy I could find at that time of night for not being able to tip him.
Turns out this fella was the first to arrive – keen as mustard, at 7.15pm. Our photographers told us you could tell who was there to be stood-up, because they were constantly checking their phones.
Not all of them had the misfortune to show up wearing fedoras.
Though this guy did have the misfortune to show up on a weird little motorbike.

And here he is leaving quarter of an hour later with a girl on each arm. I wonder if they were his ‘IRL’ friends, or girls who were watching online who’d taken pity on him? Turns out it was nothing as exciting as the latter: he was actually there to promote his internet start-up company. Which presumably explains the miasma of loneliness that the other men picked up on and were attracted to like sharks in a swimming pool at an all-girls boarding school.
Here are a couple of black and white shots because loneliness always looks more lonely when there are just two colours. The poignancy factor’s also buoyed by the presence of the beautiful advert woman and, somehow, by the close proximity of a TGI Fridays.
At some point, someone came down and started handing out cuddly toys. Are men who wear fedoras aware of internet memes? Because that guy seems pretty confused by Pedobear.
